Abiotic | Non-living |
Biotic | Living or once-living |
Biodiversity | Variety of living organisms in an ecosystem or given area |
Consumer | An organism that gets its energy from something biotic |
Producer | An organism that makes its own food source using something abiotic |
Herbivore | Consumes only plant products |
Omnivore | Consumes both plant and animal products |
Carnivore | Consumes only animal products |
Decomposer | Breaks down dead or decaying matter for energy |
Scavenger | Feeds on dead matter for energy |
Food chain | Shows the flow of energy between organisms at different trophic levels |
Trophic Level | A step in the food chain |
Food Web | Shows the flow of energy between several interconnecting food chains |
Ecological Pyramid | Used to show the relationship between biomass and energy at each trophic level |
Biomass | The total living mass in an ecosystem or given area |
Symbiosis | A close and usually long-term relationship between organisms of two different species |
Mutualism | A type of symbiosis in which both species benefit |
Commensalism | A type of symbiosis in which one organism benefits and the other remains unaffected |
Parasitism | A type of symbiosis in which one organism benefits while harming the other |
Predation | A relationship in which one organism hunts, kills, and consumes the other |
Predator | An animals that hunts and kills other animals for food |
Prey | An animal that is hunted and killed for a food source |
Interspecies Competition | When organisms of different species compete for the same resource |
Intraspecies Competition | When organisms of the same species compete for the same resource |
Niche | The role of an organism in its ecosystem |
Invasive Species | A species that has entered an ecosystem in which it is not native to where it survives and reproduces |
Transpiration | When water evaporates from the leaves of plants |
Evaporation | When water moves from a liquid to gas state |
Condensation | When water vapor condenses to a liquid in clouds |
Precipitation | When water falls towards the surface of the earth as rain, snow, sleet, or hail |
Seepage | When water seeps into the ground |
Runoff | Water that flows off the surface of the land towards larger bodies of water |
Uptake | When plants take water up into their roots |
Respiration | When organisms take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide and water vapor |
Fossil Fuels | Coal, natural gas, or gasoline that can be burned for fuel |
Photosynthesis | A process that uses carbon dioxide and water to make glucose and oxygen |
Nitrogen Fixation | A process in which bacteria convert nitrogen gas to usable nitrates |
