metaphor | an comparison used to enhance the meaning of what is being compared; may be direct (X is Y) or implied ("He wanted to win her heart" comparing love to a battle) |
personification | attributing human characteristics to something not human |
figurative language | writing or speech that is not intended to carry literal meaning and is usually meant to be imaginative and vivid. |
alliteration | use of the same consonant at the beginning of each stressed syllable in a line of verse |
onomatopoeia | using words that imitate the sound they denote |
repetition | the repeated use of the same word or word pattern as a sound device |
end rhyme | rhyme that occurs at the end of two or more lines of poetry |
internal rhyme | a rhyme between words in the same line |
slant rhyme | rhyme in which the vowel sounds are nearly, but not exactly the same (i.e. the words "stress" and "kiss"); sometimes called half-rhyme, near rhyme, or partial rhyme |
rhyme scheme | a pattern of rhyming lines in a poem or verse of a poem often indicated with matching letters to show which line rhymes. |
mood | the feeling of a story, poem, or text |
tone | the attitude of the author toward the subject or the audience |
speaker | the voice or narrator of the poem |
