Soft money

political contributions made in such a way as to avoid the United States regulations for federal election campaigns (as by contributions to a political action committee)

Suffrage

a legal right guaranteed by the 15th amendment to the US constitution

Grandfather clause

A clause in registration laws allowing people who do not meet registration requirements to vote if they or their ancestors had voted before 1867.

Poll tax

a tax of a fixed amount per person and payable as a requirement for the right to vote

Canvass

an inquiry into public opinion conducted by interviewing a random sample of people

Register

enroll to vote

Office group ballot

one that lists the candidates together by the office for which they are running

Ticket splitting

voting with one party for one office and with another party for other offices

Party column ballot

a ballot listing all candidates of a given party together under the name of that party; also called an Indiana ballot

Canvassing board

official body that counts votes and certifies the winner

Absentee ballot

Allows a person to vote without going to the polls on election day.

Cross pressured voter

one who is caught between conflicting elements in his or her own life, one who is caught between conflicting elements in his or her own life (religion, income level, and peer group)

Straight party ticket

voting for all candidates in the same political party

Propaganda

information designed to influence opinion
