Prophet A messenger for God: an intermediary between God and People Prophecy Noun- a message that claims to be divinely inspired utterance or discourse Prophesy Verb- To speak by divine inspiration: the act of speaking a prophecy Vaticinium ex Eventu Prophecy out of the Event. Prophecy after the fact Foretelling Predicting the future. Prophets generally claimed to predict events that immediately affected their audience. Example: Th Syro-Ephramite War (735-732 BCE) and Isaiah 7-9 Forthtelling Proclaming a Message. Concern with religious faithfulness and social justice. Examples: Isaiah 1:10-17 Jer 6:20-21 Early Monarchial Period 11th-9th century BCE Genesis to Judges The Assyrian Crisis 8th-7th century BCE The Babylonian Crisis and the Exile late 7th-mid 6th century BCE Post-exilic Prophecy and Apocalyptic mid 6th century- 2nd century BCE Eschatology a view of what is going to happen in the future Prophetic eschatology future judgment/ promise in the present time/ world apocalyptic eschatology future judgment/ promise at end of the present time/world and begin a new time/world
