Definitions

Autotroph organism that can capture energy from sunlight or chemicals and use it to produce its own food from inorganic compounds; also called a producer
Biodiversity the diversity of plant and animal life in a particular habitat (or in the world as a whole)
Biosphere part of Earth in which life exists including land, water, and air or atmosphere
Biotic the living organisms in an ecosystem
Carnivore a flesh-eating animal
Carrying Capacity largest number of individuals of a population that a environment can support
Community (ecology) a group of interdependent organisms inhabiting the same region and interacting with each other
Competition the struggle between organisms to survive in a habitat with limited resources
Consumer organism that relies on other organisms for its energy and food supply; also called a heterotroph
Decomposer organism that breaks down and obtains energy from dead organic matter
Ecology scientific study of interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment
Ecological Niche (ecology) the status of an organism within its environment and community (affecting its survival as a species)
Ecological Succession (ecology) the gradual and orderly process of change in an ecosystem brought about by the progressive replacement of one community by another until a stable climax is established
Ecosystem living and nonliving things in an environment, together with their interactions
Energy Pyramid a diagram that shows the amount of energy that moves from one feeding level to another in a food web
Environment all of the surrounding things, conditions, and influences affecting the growth or development of living things.
Food Chain a series of events in which one organism eats another and obtains energy
Food Web a diagram that shows the feeding relationships between organisms in an ecosystem
Habitat the type of environment in which an organism or group normally lives or occurs
Herbivore organism that obtains energy by eating only plants
Heterotroph organism that obtains energy from the foods it consumes; also called a consumer
Host an animal or plant that nourishes and supports a parasite
Limiting Factors Conditions in the environment that put limits on where an organism can live, any biotic or abiotic factor that restricts the existence, numbers, reproduction, or distribution of organisms.
Parasite an animal or plant that lives in or on a host (another animal or plant)
Population a group of organisms of the same species populating a given area
Predator animal that hunts and eats other animals
Prey animal hunted or caught for food
Producer organism that can capture energy from sunlight or chemicals and use it to produce food from inorganic compounds; also called an autotroph
