Terms | Definitions |

voice over | A form of narration in which an off-screen voice comments on the action, circumstances or attitudes. |
sound effects | Recordings or imitations of sounds added to a film to highlight an object or make the scene appear real. |
camera angles | Various positions of the camera (high, medium, or low; and left, right, or straight on) with respect to the subject, each giving a different viewpoint or effect. |
camera shots | Different distances of a picture. Includes long shots, medium shots, close-ups and extreme close-ups. |
special effects | Settings, events, and images that are created by skilled technicians using mostly computer and digital technology. |
on-set text | Text which occurs in the setting which helps the viewer understand the time or place. |
on-screen text | Text (usually at the bottom of the screen) to help the viewer understand a time or place. Eg. New York or 2012 |
camera movement | Any motion of a camera in a shot, including panning, tilting or zooming. |
lighting | The deliberate application of light to achieve an effect. |
music | Music added to a scene after filming to enhance the emotional impact on the viewer. |
credits | A list of acknowledgements of those who contributed to the creation of a film (usually run at the beginning and end of the film). |
setting | The time and place in which the film is supposed to be set. |
