Definitions

Autotrophs change light energy from sun to chemical energy- foods, primarily carbohydrates by process of photosynthesis -- plants
Heterotrophs get energy from eating food (other heterotrophs or autrophs) -- animals
What is photosynthesis? Taking energy from the sun; using it to produce chemical energy in the form of carbohydrates.
What are the two stages of photosynthesis? Light Reactions and Calvin Cycle (Dark Reactions)
Light Reactions Light energy from the sun changed to chemical energy stored temporarily in ATP and NADPH
Calvin Cycle (Dark Reactions) Form carbohydrates using C O2 and ATP and NADPH
Photosynthesis equation 6 C O2 + 6 H2 O > light energy > C6 H12 O6 + 6 O2
What is needed for photosynthesis? Carbon Dioxide (C O2) plus water (H2 O) and light energy
What is made in photosynthesis? Carbohydrate (C6H12O6)
What is released in photosynthesis? Oxygen (O2)
Where does photosynthesis occur? Photosynthesis occurs inside a chloroplast
Chloroplast An organelle that captures light inside membrane in flattened sacs called thylakoids
Thylakoid A saclike membrane that is the structural unit of the grana in the chloroplasts of plant cells
Grana (one stack is called granum) A series of stacked thylakoid disks containing chlorophyll; found in the inner membrane of chloroplasts.
Stroma The fluid content of the chloroplast organelle.
