Definitions

UNITY occurs when all elements work together to communicate ideas or feelings -proximity, similarity, continuation
Proximity the tendency to see things that are overlapped, touching, or close together as a group
Similarity alike in color, value, texture, shape, or form
Continuation when you examine any visual form, your eyes move. they flow your vision that is directed by lines, edges of shapes, and the arrangement of elements.
VARIETY acheived by introducing differences in the elements in a composition.
EMPHASIS occurs when one element in an artwork or a combination of elements, attracts more attention than anything else in a composition
focal point the place we tend to look first; place where the artist whishes to draw attention
placement a technique used to create emphasis- where the shape or form can be placed to be made dominant
contrast technique to create emphasis- opposits frequently used to make an element of a composition dominant; big difference between something: light vs. dark, small vs. big, horizontal vs. vertical
detail a technique used to create emphasis- extreme details maybe, realism for example.
grouping technique to create emphasis- putting elements together; recognizable forms around abstract ones, all light with one dark.
RHYTHM combined elements to produce movement. created when a specific element is repeated or gradually changes color.
repetion repeating the same element such as a shape of form with little to no variation
alternation repeating two or more elements with an alternating basis. cirlce square, square circle
progression where an elemnt gradually changes its shape, size, position, or color
implied movement by stopping time it implies a relationship to the time and movment. the subject motionless, but maeks your eyes travel
sequence seeing one figure in an overlapping sequence of poses, with slight changes in a logical order *think comic strip
optical movement art that seems to move, but works are static. illusion of movement due to the response of your eyes to the artwork.
actual movement actual movement in the artwork - KINETIC ART
BALANCE occurs when the visual weight of actual work feels equally distributed
asymmetrical balance equally distributed visual weight with figures and objects that are different from the vertical axis
symmetrical balance objects that are equally distributed on either side of a central vertical axis. one side is a mirror image.
approximate symmetry similar to implay a veritcal central axis but varied a little to challenge you to pick out the differences
radial balance repetitive placement of two or more identical or very similar elements branching from the middle out. usually a circle but not always. radial design.
PATTERN repeating line, shape, or other elements to create a recognizable order
motif the repeated element
PROPORTION concerns the size relationship of artwork
scale refers to the size of an object in relation to the size of the other objects around it.
