700 BC Healing roles transferred to males.
2000 BC - 146 AD Greek Women had some influence including: Hygiea, goddess of Healing & Demeter, caretaker of women & Children. Women were allowed to practice midwifery, and had prestige & freedom to practice.
50 - 476 AD Early Christian Era Organized nursing came into existence as expression of charity. Rome ruled, St. Paul introduced Phoebe of Cenchreae as a deaconess of the church.
476 - 1450 AD Dark & Middle Ages Hospitals were founded, Monks & Nuns assumed nursing duties, cliniliness & ventilation nonexistent. Nursing care was very basic: meds, bathing, wound care
1450 - 1800 AD Renaissance to 19th century Church influence diminished, experienced nurses were from religious orders. Plagues came, high demand for nurses; there were not enough. St. Vincent de Paul recognized situation, dedicated his life to improve conditions for the sick.
Beginnings of Modern Nursing Educated women disapproved of manual labor, hospital conditions were bad, most sick were taken care of at home. Pastor Kaiserwerth, 1st school of nursing est. in German 1836.
Late 19th & Early 20th Century 1863 International Red Cross formed; prepared in advace for war and disaster also helped gather/store medical supplies. 1881 American Red Cross formed.
20th Century credentialing American Nurses Code of Ethics: 1926. Nursing specialization; 1949 Assoc. of operating room nurses, 1969 American Assoc. of Critical Care RN's, 1975 Oncology Nursing Society.
20 Century Evolving practice Rapid expansion of knowledge & technology. Nursing practice outside hospitals (clinics, community) ↑ in #s of aging = nursing shortages.
