Purposes & Tasks of the Family1) Reproduction, 2) Development (all areas) of children & adults, 3) Provide basic needs, 4) Provide sense of belonging, personal & social identity, & meaning & direction for life, 5) Foster a value system built on spiritual & philosophic beliefs & the cultural & social system that is part of the identity, 6) Teach members basic life skills, social roles, & to communicate effectively their needs, ideas, & feelings, 7) Provide protective care & support for young, ill, disabled, or otherwise vulnerable members, 8) Provide relationships & experience w/in & w/o the family that foster security, support, encouragement, motivation, morale, & creativity, 9) Maintain authority & decision making, w/ the parents representing society to the family as a whole & the family unit to society, 10) Release family members into the larger society - school, church, organizations, employment etc., 11) Maintain constructive & responsible ties w/ the neighborhood & broader community
Adaptive responsesthe means by which the family maintains an internal equilibrium so that it can fulfill purposes & tasks, deal w/ internal & external stress & crisis, & allow for growth of individual members (Ex. talking over problems, finding solutions together, humor, problem-solving, flexibility, nonsense, shared work, & leisure: Help relieve tension
Adaptive mechanisms Used to avoid, minimize, or resolve emotional conflicts (keep the peace) temporarily: Scapegoating or blaming, Coalitions or alliances, Withdrawal of emotional ties, Repetitive fighting, Family myths or traditional beliefs, Reaction formation, Resignation or compromise, Designation of one person as family healer (Negative effects if used consistently to solve problems as they then become defensive, unlikely to resolve conflicts, & the issues arise repeatedly - not healthy copint)
