Definitions

Heat The movement if thermal energy from a substance at a higher temperature to another at a lower temperature. It is thermal energy moving from a warmer object to a cooler object.
Conduction The transfer of heat between particles within a substance,
Convection The movement that transfers heat within the water.
Convection currents Currents caused by the rising of heated fluid and sinking of cooled fluid.
Radiation The transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves.
Conductor A material that conducts heat well.
Insulator A material that doesn't conduct heat well.
Specific heat The amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one kilogram of a substance by one kelvin.
States The three forms (solid, liquid, and gas) in which matter exists.
Change of state *The physical change from one state of matter to another.
Melting *The change of state from a solid to a liquid.
Melting point The temperature at which a solid changes to a liquid.
Freezing The change of state from a liquid to a solid. Freezing occurs when a substance looses thermal energy.
Freezing point The temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a solid.
Vaporization The process by which matter changes from the liquid to the gas state.
Evaporation Vaporization that occurs at the surface of a liquid.
Boiling Vaporization that occurs on and below the surface of a liquid.
Boiling point The temperature at which a liquid boils.
Condensation A change from the gas state to a liquid state.
Thermal expansion The expanding of matter when it is heated.
Thermostats A device that regulates heat. A heat-regulating device. Thermal expansion are used in thermostats.
Bimetallic strips A strip made two different metals that expand at different rates.
