Social psychology The scientific field that seeks to understand the nature and causes of individual behavior and though in social situations
Evolutionary psychology Seeks to understand the potential role of genetic factors in various aspects of human behavior
Social neuroscience Seeks knowledge about the neural and biological bases of social behavior
multicultural perspective A focus on understanding the cultural and ethnic factors that influence social behavior
Systematic observation an area in research in which behavior is systematically observed and recorded
Survey method A method in which a large number of people answer questions about their attitudes or behavior
Correlational method Observes two or more variables to determine whether changes in one are accommpanied by changes in the other
Hypothesis An unvertified prediction concerning some aspect of social behavior or social thought
Experimental Method A method in which one or more factors are systematically changed to determine whether such variations affect one or more other factors
Independent variable The variable that is changed in an experiment
dependent variable The variable that is measured in an experiment
random assignment of participants to experimental conditions A basic requirement for conducting experiments, All participants must have an equal chance of being exposed to each level of independent variable
External validity The extent in which findings of an experiment can be generalized to real life social situations and perhaps different people
Mediating variable A variable that is affected by an indepedent variable and then influences a dependent variable
Theories Attempts to understand why certain events or processes occur as they do
Deception A technique whereby researchers withhold information about the purposes or procedures of the study
Informed Consent Participants are provided with as much info as possible about the study before deciding whether to participate
Debriefing Procedure at the conclusion of the research session in which participants are given full info about the nature of the research and hypothesis
