Nickname given to president Andrew Jackson for his toughness. Jackson was a war hero. Both of his parents died at age 13. Had a short temper.
Tariff of Abominations
Congress passed a very high tariff to protect industry in the north. Southerners were angry because it raised prices for their agricultural needs.
2nd Bank of the U.S.
Many states opposed it and taxed its branches. Led to court case McCulloh v. Maryland. Elastic Clause allowed bank. MA could not tax it.
Calhoun opposed the high tariff and said states could "null" this federal law.
Indian Removal Act
Removed indians from east of Mississippi River and put them on reservations in the midwest
Trail of Tears
gold found in Georgia Cherokee land. Worcester v. Georgia ruled illegal to move Indians. Jackson did not enforce it; led to 800-mile Indian march. 1/4 Cherokee died.
Worcester v. Georgia
court case ruled that it was illegal for Georgia to kick out Cherokee. Federal had the power, not the state.
Jackson's cabinet and his informal helping group sometimes met in the White House's kitchen.
