NOTATION: A version of this quiz that uses diacritics (ā ī ū ṅ ñ ṭ ḍ ṇ ḷ ṃ) can be found at http://tinyurl.com/gair-1a . This quiz (accessible at http://tinyurl.com/gair-1a-v ) uses the Velthuis method to represent Pali-specific letters. In short, for the Velthuis method, the following substitutions are made for Pali-specific diacriticized Roman letters: ā = aa; ī = ii; ū = uu; ṃ = .m; ṅ = "n; ñ = ~n; ṭ = .t; ḍ = .d; ṇ = .n; ḷ = .l . DEVIATIONS FROM SOURCE:

A significant simplification made on this quiz set (vs. the one at http://tinyurl.com/gair-1a ) is that most Pali terms are given English translations limited to one or two words; variant and extended translations are relegated to parentheses to simplify recall and quiz taking. (This is useful, for instance, when in some quiz modes one can check a box to ignore all material included in parentheses.)

Relatedly, two terms ("anuppanna," "uppanna") have been supplemented by information from the Pali Text Society's Pali-English Dictionary (for which a general on-line search engine can be found at: http://dsal.uchicago.edu/dictionaries/pali ). In such definitions, a parenthetical "PTS PED" is added. (These PTS PED definitions were added for either conciseness or symmetry, respectively.)

A third term, "pahaana.m" has also been amended using a "PTS PED" translation of "abandoning" (vs. Gair & Karunatillake's translation of "avoidance, destruction"). This is because this term is frequently encountered in the Pali canon (e.g., famously in descriptions of Right Effort; 14 times in DN 22 alone [see http://www.tipitaka.org/romn/cscd/s0102m.mul8.xml ]; and, according to a search of traditional Pali literature at BodhgayaNews [ http://www.bodhgayanews.net/pali.htm ], this term and its inflections are found 641 times in the entire Pali canon itself) and all translations upon which I can readily get my hands (e.g., Bodhi, Nyanasatta, Soma, Thanissaro, etc.) generally translate "pahaa.na.m" as "abandoning."

Finally, Gair & Karunatillake have included in their Lesson I, initial glossary, three terms ("ceva," "naaha.m," "nuppajjati") to illustrate how some terms are combined in Pali, following rules of "sandhi." Thus, for instance, in their definition of the term "ceva" Gair & Karunatillake do not have an English translation (such as, "and verily") but show the constituent parts, "ca + eva." To signify these three Pali terms in this quiz set, each Pali term is followed by "(sandhi)."
