cell

the smallest living part of a plant or animal

cell membrane

a thin wall that encloses the entire cell. It allows food to enter the cell and waste to leave. It helps to give the cell shape and is slightly protective.

cell wall

the tough and rigid outer wall that surrounds the cell membrane in plants. It gives stiffness to plants as they grow.

nucleus

the control center of the cell. It tells the cell what to do and regulates cell growth.

chloroplasts

organelles found only in plant cells. Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll that uses energy from sunlight to help produce (make) its own food.

tissue

a group of similar cells that work together. Examples: muscles

organ

a group of similar tissues that does a specific job in the body. Examples: heart, lungs, stomach

system

a group of organs that work together to provide a function for the body. Examples: circulatory, digestive, skeletal, respiratory

watershed

an area of land where all of the water runoff flows and collects in a large body of water

Riparian Forest Buffer

an area of trees, shrubs, and other plants located next to and up slope from a lake, stream or other body of water

runoff

all water that runs off the surface of the land and washes into rivers, streams and other waterways

algae

small plants that thrive on excess nutrients. Algae grows in waterways where excess nutrients build up.

pollution (pollutants)

anything in the environment that can harm living things or damage natural resources

producer

an organism that makes (produces) its own food

consumer

an organism that gets energy by eating other organisms
