Definitions

Application software It enables you to perform specific computer tasks, such as document production, spread sheet calculations, and database management.
Bluetooth Short ranged radio waves to connect a device wirelessly to another device.
Database a collection of information stored on one or more computers organized in a uniform format of records and fields. An online card catalog in a library is an example.
Database management software lets you collect and manage data. For example Microsoft Access.
Device Driver or driver, a computer program that can establish communication because it contains information about the characteristics of your computer and of the device.
Flash memory similar to ROM except it can be written to more than once. (ROM means read-only memory, like when you use a CD ROM. it only reads the memory that is on that disk).
Floppy disk A flat circle of magnetic oxide-coated Mylar enclosed in a hard plastic case that can store 1.44 MB, or 1,440,000 bytes, of data.
Gigabyte (GB) A series of eight bits and it is 1,073,741,824 bytes, or about one billion bytes.
Graphics software Software that allows you to create illustrations, diagrams, graphs, and charts.
GUI (graphical user interface) acts as a liaison between the user and all of the computer's hardware and software. (Windows)
Hard disk contains several magnetic oxide-covered metal platters that are usually sealed in a case inside the computer, the hard disk is used to store data and multimedia files.
Hyperlink A place on a web page that is programmed to connect to a particular file on the same network server, or for example a network server on the other side of the globe (possibly).
Information management software allows people to keep track of their schedules, appointments, contacts, and to do lists
Infrared technology a wireless technology in which devices communicate with one another using infrared light waves. An example of this technology used in TV remote controls.
Internet the largest network in the world, connecting millions of people. A network connects computers to other computers.
Kilobyte (KB or K) 1024 bytes, or approximately one thousand bytes. A byte is a series of eight bits.
LAN Local area network computers and peripheral devices are relatively close to each other, generally in the same building.
Linking allows you to create a connection between the source data and the copy in the new file in which the link updates the copy every time a change is made.
Magnetic storage device store data as magnetized particles on Mylar, a plastic, which is then coated on both sides with a magnetic oxide coating.
Megabyte (MB) 1,048,576 bytes, or about one million bytes. A byte is a series of eight bits.
Network connects one computer to other computers and peripheral devices, enabling you to share data and resources with others.
Operating system software that that allocates system resources, manages storage space, maintains security, detects equipment failure, controls basic input and output, and helps the computer perform essential tasks such as displaying information on the computer screen and saving data on disks.
Optical storage devices polycarbonate discs coated with a reflective metal on which data is recorded using laser technology as a trail of tiny pits or dark spots on the surface of the disc. ( DVD and CD)
Presentation software allows you to display or project graphics and other information to a group.
Servers A network that has one or more computers. A server acts like the central storage location for most data used on a network.
Spreadsheet software It is a numerical analysis tool that both businesses and individuals use extensively.
System software Software that helps the computer carry out its basic operating tasks.
Terabyte (TB) is 1024 gigabytes or approximately one trillion bytes these are sizes of capacity.
USB flash storage device (also called USB drive or flash drive) popular type of flash memory about the size of a pack of gum that plugs directly into the PC; the computer recognizes the device as another disk drive.
WAN Wide Area Network more than one LAN connected together. The Internet is the largest example of this.
Web browsing software A communications software that helps you navigate the web and use the web browsing software to look at the Internet.
Web page A special type of text file that can include text, graphics, sound, animation, and video.
Web site A collection of web pages.
WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) describe networks connected using a standard radio frequency established by the institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
World Wide Web A huge database of information that is stored on network servers in places that allow public access.
