Definitions

Phospholipid bilayer The cell membrane that contains other lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates
Hydrophobic freely associating with water; readily entering into solution
Hydrophilic incapable of freely associating with water; insoluble
Cholesterol a steroid component of cell membreanes and substrate for the synthesis of steroid hormones and bile salts
Integral protein part of the membrane
Peripheral protein bound to the inner or outer surface of the membrane and are easily separated from it
Anchoring protein attach the cell membrane to other structures and stabilize its position
Recognition protein A protein or glycoprotein protruding from the outside surface of a plasma membrane that identifies a cell as belonging to a particular species, to a specific individual of that species, and in many cases to one specific organ within the individual.
Enzyme any of several complex proteins that are produced by cells and act as catalysts in specific biochemical reactions
Receptor protein sensitive to the presence of specific extracellular molecules call ligands
Carrier protein binds solutes and transport them across the cell membrane.
Channel protein a central pore
Glycoprotein A protein covalently attached to a carbohydrate
Glycolipid A lipid covalently attached to a carbohydrate
Glycocalyx the carbohydrate portions of these large molecules extend beyond the outer surface of the membrane
Cytoskeleton functions as the cell's skeleton; has four components; mircrofilaments, intermediate filaments, microtubules, and thick filaments
