 City-State | a political unit made up of a city and its surrounding lands - often associated with ancient Greece (Athens, Sparta) |
| Republic | A government in which citizens elect representatives to rule in their name. Also a government of non-heriditary leaders. |
| Crusades | in the year 1096... a series of wars to take Palestine from the Muslims. Item for consideration: Compare the view of a Muslim living in Palestine in 1096 vs. an American living in New York City on September 11, 2001. |
| Renaissance | Began in the Italian City States - a time of renewed interest in learning and the arts that lasted from the 14th through the 16th centuries. |
| aqueducts | structures that carry water for long distances |
| Benelux | the countries of Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg |
| Reformation | Led by Martin Luther, a period when many Christians broke away from the Roman Catholic Church and started Protestant Churches (those who Protest & sought Reform). |
| feudalism | A political system in which powerful lords owned most of the land. They gave some to nobles in exchange for military service by those nobles |
| Nationalism | the belief that people should be loyal to their nation, the people with whom they share land, culture, and history. |
| Holocaust | a program of mass murder of European Jews and other minorities. Total Deaths approximately 13,000,000 of which 6,000,000 were Jews. |
| Berlin Wall | A wall, built around West Berlin (which was in the Soviet Sector of Post WW II Germany) to keep East Germans from migrting to the west - and freedom. |
| Nordic Countries | Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden |
| Parliament | a representative lawmaking body whose members are electedor appointed. In some cases, they inherit the position. |
| Silicon Glen | The section of Scotland between Glasgow and Edinburgh, so called because it has so many high-tech companies which use silicon chips. |
| Euro | The common monitary currency of countries belonging to the European Union (EU) |
| cultural crossroads | a place where various cultures cross paths, such as traders, nomads, migrants, and armies passing through the region |
| balkanization | process of a region breaking up into small, mutually hostile units (as the Balkan states did) |
| Satellite nations | Nations dominated by another country (as the Soviet Union dominated eastern Europe in post WW II |
