City-State a political unit made up of a city and its surrounding lands - often associated with ancient Greece (Athens, Sparta)
Republic A government in which citizens elect representatives to rule in their name. Also a government of non-heriditary leaders.
Crusades in the year 1096... a series of wars to take Palestine from the Muslims. Item for consideration: Compare the view of a Muslim living in Palestine in 1096 vs. an American living in New York City on September 11, 2001.
Renaissance Began in the Italian City States - a time of renewed interest in learning and the arts that lasted from the 14th through the 16th centuries.
