Persona

Mask or voice assumed by a writer. When a poet is not the speaker of a poem, the poet is a persona.

Rhyme

Repetition of accented vowel sounds and all sounds following them in words that are close together in a poem.

End Rhyme

Rhyming that occurs at the end of a line.

Internal Rhyme

Rhyming that occurs within the lines.

Rhyme Scheme

The pattern of rhymed lines in a poem.

Approximate Rhyme

Words that sound similar but do not rhyme exactly.

Rhythm

Musical quality in language produced by repetition.

Sonnet

Fourteen-line lyric poem, usually written in iambic pentameter.

Stanza

Group of consecutive lines that form a single unit in a poem.

Oxymoron

A combination of opposites.

Pun

A play on words that are identical or similar in sound by have sharply diverse meanings.
