Nutrients Substances that the body needs to regulate bodily functions, promote growth, repair body tissues, and obtain energy.
Metabolism Chemical process by which your body breaks down food to release energy.
Calories The amount of energy released when nutrients are broken down.
Carbohydrates Body's main source of energy.
Fiber Type of complex carbohydrate found in plants.
Fats this nutrient supplies your body with energy, forms your cells, maintains body temperature, and protects your nerves.
Unsaturated fats A fat that is liquid at room temperature and found in vegetable oils, nuts, and seeds.
Saturated fats A fat that is solid at room temperature and found in animal fats, lards, and dairy products.
Cholesterol A waxy fat like substance found in animal products.
Trans fat Adding hydrogen to fat molecules in vegetable oils, used to help preserve food.
Proteins Nutrient responsible for growth and repair of your body's tissues.
Amino Acids Small substances that are bound together to form protein.
Vitamins Nutrients that are made by living things, are required only in small amounts, and that assist many chemical reactions in the body.
Fat-soluble Vitamins Vitamins that can be stored in the body. Vitamins A, D, E, & K.
Antioxidants Vitamins that help protect healthy cells from the damage caused by the normal aging process as well as certain types of cancer. Vitamins C & E.
Minerals Nutrients that occur naturally in rocks and soil. Your body requires only a small amount.
Osteoporosis A condition in which the ones gradually weaken, caused by a lack of calcium.
Calcium Mineral important to blood clotting and the functioning of the nervous system. It is an essential ingredient in the formation and maintenance of bones and teeth.
Potassium Mineral important to help maintain water balance and make protein; functioning of heart and nervous system.
Iron Mineral important for healthy red blood cells.
Water Essential for all life processes, including the production of energy.
dehydration A serious reduction in the body's water content.
Dietary Guidelines for Americans A document developed by nutrition experts to promote health and help people reduce their risk for heart disease, cancer, and diabetes through diet and physical activity.
Nutrient-dense foods Foods that contain a lot of vitamins and minerals relative to the number of calories.
Empty calories Foods that are high in calories but low in vitamins and minerals.
