Lacrimal glands

Continuously secrete tears that travel through the lacrimal ducts

Sclera

White of the eye

Iris

Circular Structure whose color is determined by genetics

Miosis

Process of narrowing the size of the pupil

Ciliary body

An extension of the choroid that attaches to suspensory ligaments that hold the lens in place behind the iris

Aqueous humor

Clear, watery fluid that is produced continuously by the ciliary body

Blephar/o

Combining form for eyelid

Irid/o

Combining form for Iris

Scler/o

Combining form for sclera

Corne/o

Combining form for Cornea

Kerat/o

Combining form for cornea (also hard fibrous protein)

Blepharitis

Inflammation of the eyelid

Hordeolum

Red, painful swelling or a pimple containing pus on the eyelid - also known as a stye

Inflamed, reddend, and swollen conjunctiva with dilated blood vessels in the sclera - also known as pinkeye

Pinkeye

Acute contagious bacterial conjunctivitis with mucus discharge

Intraocular pressure

IOP

Cataract

Clouding of the lens

Presbyopia

Loss of flexibility of the lens with blurry near vision and loss of accommodation

Astigmatism

Surface of the cornea is curved more steeply in one area, so there is no single point of focus - the patient's vision is blurry both near and at a distance

Hyperopia

Farsightedness - patient can see things clearly in the distance, but close things are blurry

Myopia

Nearsightedness - Patient can see things clearly that are close, but things in the distance are blurry

Snellen Chart

Used to test distance vision from 20 feet away

Phorometry

Procedure to select the strength of lens that corrects the patient's refractive error to give 20/20 vision

Tonometry

Procedure to detect increased intraocular pressure and glaucoma

Tonometer

Pressed against the cornea to record intraocular pressure

Visual acuity testing

Procedure to test near and distance visual acuity

Myopia surgery

Procedure to correct nearsightedness
