What is Biology?
the study of life. in greek bio means "life" and ology means "study of"
What are two basic cell types?
List 6 characteristics of life.
• GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
• SELF-REGULATED METABOLISM
• RESPOND TO STIMULI
• ADAPTATION AND EVOLUTION
What are Prokarytotic cells?
• EXCLUSIVE TO EUBACTERIA AND ARCHAEA
• SIMPLE: NO NUCLEUS OR MEMBRANEENCLOSED
What is biological growth?
INCREASE IN SIZE OF INDIVIDUAL CELLS
AND/OR THE NUMBER OF CELLS
GROWTH MAY BE UNIFORM, RESULTING IN RELATIVE
PROPORTIONS OF INDIVIDUALS TO REMAIN CONSTANT
AS IN HUMANS, PROPORTIONS CHANGE
THE ORGANISM REACHES A MAXIMUM SIZE OR
POINT IN DEVELOPMENT AND STOPS GROWING
THE ORGANISM IS CONTINUALLY GROWING UNTIL
THE SUM OF ALL CHEMICAL ACTIVITIES IN AN ORGANISM
PHYSICAL OR CHEMICAL CHANGES IN THE INTERNAL OR
POPULATIONS EVOLVE TO BETTER SURVIVE
HOWEVER, EVOLUTION IS NOT DIRECTIONAL
IS CHANGES IN GENETIC FREQUENCIES OVER TIME AT
THE POPULATION LEVEL.
THEORY OF EVOLUTION VIA NATURAL SELECTION FIRST
CONCEPTUALIZED BY CHARLES DARWIN AND ALFRED RUSSEL
THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES BY NATURAL SELECTION WAS PUBLISHED IN
EVOLUTION IS THE UNIFYING CONCEPT OF BIOLOGY
What is a theory?
composed of well tested hyphothesis, experiemented over and over by many people.
an observation that has been confirmed repeatedly and is accepted as true (although its truth is never final)
What is a common misconception of evolution?
many people thing the charlse darwin invented evolution, but it was discussed hundreds of years befor darwin. darwin just described the primary mechanism (natural selection)
Do scientist argue over the validty of evolution?
Yes. they do argue over the fine mechanism of evolution but not wheater if evolution actually occurs. they all agree it did happen.
what are Eukaryotic cells?
• ALL OTHER ORGANISMS (EUKARYOTES)
• COMPOSED OF ORGANELLES THAT PERFORM SPECIFIC
