What was the causes of reconstruction. Why was this nessesary to do?

The North destroyed and beat the South in the Civil War. The North had to build them back up because the South picks all the cotton and does all the farming. Without the South the North would not be able to prduce as much as they would be with the South.(The North needed the South. They both needed each other.)
