Surface Mining Control & Reclamation Act
Requires coal strip mines to reclaim (Create new land or restore area to more natural state) and regulate active coal mines. Created in 1977.
This went into effect in 1990 and includes a moratorium (suspension of an ongoing activity) on mineral exploration and development for a minimum of 50 years.
Safe Drinking Water Act
Act passed in 1974 by congress that protected the quality of water in the U.S; Set maximum contaminant levels for pollutants that may have adverse effects on human health
Clean Water Act
Federal Law setting a national goal of making all natural surface water fit for fishing and swimming by 1983, banned polluted discharge into surface water and required the metals be removed from waste

1965; Attempt to reduce non-point pollution by creating government watch dog under Dept of Health, Ed and Welfare

(1990) Relates to reducing smog and air pollution while starting an improvement on human health and longer life spans; set emission standards for cars, and limits for release of air pollutants
International treaty designed to protect the ozone layer by phasing out substances that deplete the ozone layer; International limits on CFC production to protect the ozone layer

Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation & Liability Act/ SUPERFUND
Created in 1980, it provides broad federal authority to clean up releases or threatened releases of hazardous substances that may endanger public health or the environment.
Endangered Species Act
1973, preceded by the Endangered Species Conservation Act of 1968, authorized the listing of species as "endangered, threatened, no concern", endangered species cant be hunted - sold - bought - harassed, allows governmental containment of private land if it is deemed as 'critical habitat', recieves funding from ICUN, species must have a recovery plan to be added to the list before president approves
Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species
The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species lists 700 threatened and endangered species that cannot be traded for profit (treaty)
Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, Rodenticide Act
United States federal law that set up the basic U.S. system of pesticide regulation to protect applicators, consumers and the environment.
Food Quality Protection Act
1996; Set pesticide limits in food, and all active and inactive ingredients must be screened for estrogenic/ endocrine effects.
Low Level Radioactive Policy Act
All states must have facilities to handle low level radioactive wastes.
Nuclear Waste Policy Act
Federal government's responsibility to provide permanent disposal of high-level waste and spent fuel. Generators' responsibility to bear costs of disposal; , US Government must develop a high level nuclear waste site by 2015
