Labor theory of value | The value of a commodity is equal to the amount of socially useful labor required in its production. The worker never receives the full value of his labor; some of it is always appropriated (or stolen by the capitalist as surplus value or profit which in reality is unpaid labor. |
Mode of Production | This is the manner in which society engages in the production of its means of subsistence or how it makes its living. The mode of production includes the prevailing technology as well as the social interaction between people during the process of production, or the relations of production. The working people and technology create the productive forces of a given society. |
Private Property | In marxist terminology private property refers to capital goods (land, industrial machinery, banks) or the means of production. It does not mean personal possessions (clothing housing consumer goods)... only property which produces wealth is private property. |
Bourgeoisie | the urban "middle-class" of property owners and capitalists; the ruling class under capitalism. |
Proletariat | the industrial working class under capitalism. Sometimes landless agricultural laborers are referred to as the rural proletariat. the proletariat own no property except their labor power, which is simply another commodity purchased by the capitalist. |
