Superposition older rock types are deposited first (bottom layer) while newer are progressively added on top
Horizontality sediments are deposited in a parallel to ground fashion (as horizontal layers, beds, or strata). If they are inclined, it means they have been titled since their deposition. Two exceptions: cross-bedding and deposition of mass movement
Continuity strata found truncated at Earth's surface originally extended in all directions
intrusion must be younger than the rock unit it intrudes
derivation Parts of sedimentary rocks that are derived from older rocks
Inclusions parts of older rock unit enclosed in an igneous rock body
