induction phase

loss of consciousness & depressed reflexes, respiratory depression, 2 ways, IV induction agent or gas

maintenance phase

surgical intervention takes place during this phase, close patient monitoring is needed

emergence phase

when surgical intervention is being completed, patient must be awake as possible, residual undesired neuromuscular blockade mightrequire the administration of a reversal agent, risk of laryngospasm & vomiting, common to see rigidity

recovery phase

the period of time during which the patient returns to the optimum level of consciousness & well-being

preinduction phase

begins at the time of premedication & ends when induction of anesthesia begins
