electorate (n.) the total group of qualified voters; all the electors of a city or country, etc
incumbent (adj.) obligatory, required; (n.) one who holds a specific office at the time spoken of
thalidomide (n.) a drug formerly used as a sedative but withdrawn in 1961 because it was found to cause malformation of the fetus if taken by the mother in early pregnancy
sedative (adj.) tending to calm, moderate, or tranquilize; [medicine] any agent, especially a drug, that has a calming effect and is used to treat insomnia, pain, delirium, etc.
