Terms | Definitions |
|---|---|
solid | something that has definite shape and a definite volume |
crystalline solid | solids that are made up of crystals |
amorphous solid | when the particles of a solid are not arranged in a regular pattern |
liquid | something that has a definite volume but no shape of it's own |
fluid | a substance that flows (same as a liquid) |
surface tension | the result of an inward pull among the molecules of a liquid that brings the molecules on the surface closer together |
viscosity | a liquid's resistance to flowing |
gas | something that can change volume very easily |
melting | the change in state from solid to liquid |
melting point | a specific temperature in which melting occurs |
freezing | the change of state from liquid to solid |
vaporization | the change from liquid to gas |
evaporation | vaporization that takes place only on the surface of a liquid |
boiling | when a liquid changes to a gas below it's surface as well as the surface |
boiling point | the temperature at which a liquid boils |
condensation | the opposite of vaporization --or-- the change in state from gas to liquid |
sublimation | when the surface particles of a solid gain enough energy that they form a gas |
pressure | the force of gas' push (force) divided by the area of the walls of the container (area) |
Boyle's law | the relationship between the pressure and the volume of a gas that states: when the pressure of a gas at constant temperature is increased, the volume of the gas decreases and when the pressure is decreased, the volume increases |
Charles' law | the principle that states: when the temperature of a gas is increased at constant pressure, its volume increases and when the temperature of the gas is decreased at constant pressure, its volume decreases |
graph | a diagram that tells how two variables, or factors that change, are related |
origin | the point (0,0) |
directly proportional | when a graph of two variables is a straight line passing through the origin |
vary inversely | when a graph of two variables forms a curve |
