A political movement initiated by Mao that lasted from 1966 to1976. It was characterized y political zealotry, purges of intellectials and social and economic chaos. Supposed to clean country of revisionists.
Political units of university and high school students formed during the CR. Responding in 1966 to Ch. Mao's call to revitalize the country's revolutionary spirit, they tried to purge the country of its pre-communist cuture. With membership in the millions many of them attacked and persecuted local party leaders, teachers, and other intellectuals. Destroyed everything old and rich landowners who had bad class backgrounds.
Gang of Four
Four leaders held responsible for the excesses of the Cultural Revolution. The most notable of the gang of four was Jiang Qing, mao's widow. The others were Wang Hongwen, Yao Wenyuan, and Zhang Chunqiao. Wanted to keep the CR going. They were later prosecuted by Deng.
Premier of the PRC from its founding until his death. He became a communist and was an organizer for the CCP in Europe. When the Communists won he became Premier. During the Cultural Revolution he helped restrain extremists. He is credited with arranging the historic meeting between nixon and mao that paved diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Leader of the Central Committee Secretariat. Became the successor of Mao in which he took out many of Mao's reforms and created Chinese style socialism.
Learder of the Peoples liberation army. Looked as if he would become the successor of Mao. He put together the Quotations from Ch. mao. Died in a "plane accident"

Why people thought of as revisionists during the CR were sent away to relearn everything. They went to far away places and were taught exactly what ch. Mao wanted.
