Definitions

Ultrasound Sound that has a higher frequency than our normal hearing (>20KHz)
Frequency The number of wave cycles passing a point every second
Transverse wave A wave in which the vibration is at right angles to the direction in which the wave is traveling.
Longitudinal wave A wave in which the vibration is in the same direction as that in which the wave is traveling
Compression Region where molecules of medium are squeezed together
Rarefaction Region where molecules of medium are drawn apart
Interference Overlapping of one or more waves onto another wave to produce one combined wave
Constructive interference Two waves combine to make a wave with a larger amplitude
Destructive interference Two waves combine to make a wave with a smaller amplitude
In phase When the crest of a wave overlaps with crest of another wave as do the troughs
Out of phase When the crest of a wave overlaps the trough of another wave
Period The amount of time it takes one wavelength/cycle to pass a point
Wavelength Distance/length of a single cycle
Refraction Bending of beam's path at the interface between different media
Attenuation Decrease in US intensity as the wave moves through the tissues due to absorption, reflection and refraction
Reflection Redirection of the beam away from the interface surface at an opposite angle.
Transducer An instrument that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy
Doppler Effect Phenomenon of a frequency shift observed when there is a moving source or a moving observer
Lens Convex transparent cover on transducer that causes beam to converge
Acoustic impedance Measure of a material's response to the propagation of a sound wave of given pressure
