style

genre

Distinctive type of literary writing. Some novels are fiction, non-fiction, mystery, romance.

plot

The sequence of events that take place; how the story unfolds; what happens in the story.

exposition (introduction)

The story's beginning where characters, setting, mood, and point of view are extablished; "plunges the reader into the story"

characters

The people in the story are called _____.

protagonist

The main character--often the "good guy."

antagonist

The person or thing against the main character.

characterization

The author uses what people say about them, what the characters say, themselves, and what the narrator says to depict a character.

setting

The place AND time of the story, determined by styles of clothing, technology, historical occurences, customs, manner or speaking, and more.

mood (tone)

The feeling the AUTHOR CREATES for the reader during the exposition.

point of view

The way in which the story is told; who is telling it. it includes various types of narrators.

first person

omniscient

conflict

The (part of the rising action) where the problems that occur between two characters or opposing forces

internal

When the conflict is vs. himself/herself.

external

When the conflict is vs. an outside force.

When the conflict is between TWO CHARACTERS; external.

A specific type of conflict when the conflict is between a character and a force of (___), like snow or rain or wind; external.

man vs supernatural

A specific type of conflict when the conflict is between a character a a force larger than life, such as a god; external.

man vs society

A specific type of conflict when the conflict is between a character and a whole town/county; external.

A specific type of conflict when the conflict is between a character and something like a computer, TV; external.

man vs self

A specific type of conflict when the conflict is between a character and their inner thoughts; the only internal.

climax

The point of highest suspense in the story where the major conflict reaches a peak; problem usually resolved.

falling action

The few events that happen at the end of the story; 10% of the story.

denouement (final resolution)

Where the author's story resolves a final conflict.
