Definitions

Interest groups Group of like minded individuals who band together to influence public policy, opinion or governmental officals.
Single issue interest groups Groups interested primarily in one area of public policy.
Multi-issue interest groups Groups interested in pursuing a broad range of public policy issue.
Cleavages Factors that separate groups.
Disturbance Theory Idea that interest groups form when resources become scarce in order to contest the influence of other interest groups. Essentially, social change causes the growth of interest groups. Created by David Truman
Lobbyist Professionals who try to influence governmental officials.
Political Action Committees Political organizations created by interest groups to raise and spend money to influence electoral outcomes.
Professional Associations Represent people in a specific profession. Such as the AMA for physicians and ABA for attorneys.
Public Interest Groups A group that forms in pursuit of a "collective good, the achievement of which will not selectively or materially benefit the members of the organization."
Think Tanks Non profit organizations that conduct research on issues of public interests. The Brookngs Institition is one of the best-known.
Free-Rider Problem The fact that public goods can be enjoyed by everyone, including those whodo not pa their fair share of the cost to provide those goods.
Public Goods (Collective Goods) Goods used or consumed by all individuals in society.
Selective Benefits Benefits that only group members recieve, even if the collective good is beneficial to all.
Material Benefits tangible rewards gained from membership in an interest group
Solidary Benefits satisfaction gained from membership in interest groups such as friendship and a sense of belonging to a group or meeting people with similar interests
Purposive Benefits selective benefis of group membership that emphasize the purpose and accomplishments of the group
Patrons Individuals or organizations that give money to interest groups.
Inside Lobbying Appealing directly to lawmakers and legislative staff in either meetings, by providing research and informtion or by testifying at committee hearings.
Gaining Access Winning the opportunity to directly communicate with a legislator or legislative staff member to present one's positon.
Outside Lobbying (Grassroot lobbying) Activities directed at the general public to raise awareness and interest and to pressure officials.
Direct Contact Face to face meetings or telephone conversations between indiviuals.
Direct Mail Information mailed to a large number of people to advertise, market concepts, or solicit contributions and support.
Advertorials Ads that are designed to resemble editorials
