Definitions

Surface Water water collecting on the ground or in a stream, river, lake, wetland, or ocean
River System All of the streams and channels draining a river basin
Watershed An area from which water drains into a lake, stream or other body of water. Also often referred to as a basin, with the basin boundary defined by a high ridge or divide, and with a lake or river located at a lower point
Groundwater Water that exists beneath the earth's surface in underground streams and aquifers
Aquifer An underground layer of water-bearing permeable rock or unconsolidated materials (gravel, sand, silt, or clay)
Porosity Full of tiny pores that allow fluids or gasses to pass through/full of loopholes
Permeability allowing fluids or gases to pass through
Recharge Zone The area of land, including caves, sinkholes, faults, fractures and other permeable features, that allows water to replenish an aquifer
Water Cycle Describes the continuous movement of water on, above and below the surface of the Earth
Evaporation The transition from a liquid state into a gaseous state
Condensation The transition from a gas to a liquid
Precipitation The falling to earth of any form of water
Transperation The loss of water from the vaporous parts of plants, especially leaves but also stems, flowers and roots
Well A deep hole or shaft dug or drilled to obtain water or oil or gas or brine
Potable Suitable for drinking
Pathogen Any disease-producing agent
Irrigation An agricultural practice that involves providing water to crops through pipes, ditches, or streams
Dam/Reservoir A barrier constructed to contain the flow of water
Desalination/Reverse Osmosis Any of several processes that remove excess salt and other minerals from water
Water Treatment The process of purifying water to make it suitable for consumption and utilization
Water Conservation Reducing the usage of water and recycling of waste water for different purposes like cleaning, manufacturing, etc
Water Pollution contamination of water, especially surface water, by sewage effluent, fertilizer runoff, industrial chemical discharge etc
Point Source Pollution Pollution that can be traced to a single point source
Non Point Source Pollution Pollution that does not come from a single point or location
Waste Water Any water that has been used by some human domestic or industrial activity and, because of that, now contains waste products
Artificial Eutrophication A large increase in the primary productivity of a lake due to the actions of man, like fertilizer run-off from agricultural activities
Biomagnification The process, in an ecosystem, in which a higher concentration of a substance in an organism is obtained higher up the food chain
Thermal Pollution Harm to lakes and rivers resulting from the release of excessive waste heat into them
1972 Clean Water Act The primary federal law in the United States governing water pollution
Organic Matter Animal and plant matter remains
Organic Chemicals Fertilizers, oil, gas, pesticides
Inorganic Chemicals Salt, de-icer
Heavy Metals Mercury, Lead, Arsenic
Physical Agents Heat, murky, suspended solids
Storm Drain Allows water runoff from homes, streets, and other properties to flow into an underground system
Outfall The place where a sewer, drain, or stream discharges
Bioassay A method of testing a material's effects on living organisms.
Pervious A surface that allows liquids to go through. Exaple: Grass
Impervious A surface that doesn't allow liquids to pass through. Example: Roof, road
