RAID A way of storing the same data in different places on multiple hard drives.
USB A type of port for connecting peripherals.
Driver Software that determines how a computer will communicate with a peripheral device.
Network server A computer that serves as a central repository of data and programs shared by users in a network.
Network A group of people or things connected in a system that share data and programs.
BIOS A built-in software on Windows-based computers that a computer uses to make sure everything runs properly.
Hard Drive A storage device that contains saved data.
Processor The "brain" of the computer that gives instructions on how to perform jobs.
Heatsink A device that keeps the processor from overheating.
Power Supply A "box" device which supplies power throughout the computer.
Chipset The architecture of an integrated circuit which includes the layout of circuitry, the components used within the circuit, and the functionality of the circuit board.
Motherboard The "heart" of the computer that ensures every device plugged into the circuit runs efficient.
Access Point Provides wireless access to a network.
ACL A list of user permissions for a file, folder, or other object.
Backbone Refers to the main network lines that connect several local area networks (LANs) together.
Batch File A type of script that contains a list of commands.
Clock Speed The rate at which a processor can complete a processing cycle.
Defragment A way to boost the performance of a computer by adding and deleting files from your hard disk.
Hard Copy A printed document that could be a text file, photograph, drawing, or any other type of printable file.
Hard Token A hardware security device that is used to authorize a user.
Kerning Refers to the spacing between the characters of a font.
Keylogger A program that records the keystrokes on a computer.
Linux A free, open source, Unix-like operating system. It is available in several different distributions, including CentOS, Debian, Ubuntu, and Red Hat.
Mac OS X The current version of the operating system used on Apple Macintosh computers.
Windows The most popular operating system for personal computers.
FDDI A group of networking specifications standardized by ANSI in the mid-1980s.
FDDI "Fiber Distributed Data Interface."
Hertz The standard unit of measurement used for measuring frequency.
Samba An open-source software implementation of the SMB networking protocol used by Windows computers.
Golden Master The final version of a software program that is sent to manufacturing and is used to make retail copies of the software.
iPad A tablet computer developed by Apple.
iPhone A smartphone developed by Apple.
iPod A portable music player developed by Apple Computer.
ANSI A U.S.-based non-profit organization that works to develop and promote standards for new products and technologies in the United States and around the world.
ANSI "American National Standards Institute."
DOS The first operating system used by IBM-compatible computers.
Process A program that is running on your computer that can be anything from a small background task, such as a spell-checker to big applications like Internet Explorer or Microsoft Word.
DCIM The standard name of the root folder digital cameras use to store digital photos.
DCIM "Digital Camera Images."
W3C An international community that includes a full-time staff, industry experts, and several member organizations.
W3C "World Wide Web Consortium."
DOS "Disk Operating System."
ACL "Access Control List."
Phishing To steal your personal information by sending out emails that appear to be valid.
Kernel The base layer, or the foundation of the operating system.
Repeater An electronic device that relays a transmitted signal.
Bluetooth A wireless technology that is used for short-range connections between desktop and laptop computers, PDAs, digital cameras, scanners, cellular phones, and printers.
PDA A palmtop computer used to store information such as addresses and telephone numbers, and for simple word processing and spreadsheeting.

PDF A multi-platform file format developed by Adobe Systems that captures formatting info from various desktop publishing applications, making it possible to send formatted documents and have them appear on the recipient's monitor or printer as they were intended.

Power good Wire A special wire that is inside the power supply that awakens the cpu.
