This is an easy flash card review for a biology class.

Nucleus

a part of the cell containing DNA and RNA and responsible for growth and reproduction

Mitochondria

the organelles in which nutrients are converted to energy

Chloroplasts

organelles that capture the energy from sunlight and convert it into chemical energy in a process called photosynthesis

Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum

membranous organelle that has ribosomes embedded in it and is in charge of shipping out vesicles full of proteins to the Golgi apparatus.

Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum

membranous organelle that is in charge of lipid and steroid synthesis and other things similar

Golgi Apparatus

membranous organelle that modifies proteins shipped in vesicles and ships them out

Ribosomes

very small organelles in charge of protein synthesis; embedded into the rough endoplasmic reticulum

Lysosomes

digestive organelles that contains enzymes that digest food particles

Food Vacuole

organelle formed by phagocytosis; houses food particles

Central Vacuole

organelle found in mature plant cells; enclosed in a specialized membrane called a tonoplast

Cytoskeleton

"skeleton" of a cell; made up of microtubules

Cell Membrane

outside layer of an animal cell; composed of the lipid bilayer, specialized proteins, and carbohydrate chains

Cell Wall

outside layer of a plant cell; thick; made of cellulose
