1980-1988. There are many factors that sparked this conflict. Some say the Saddam wanted access to the rich oil mines in Iran and was taking advantage of the turmoil in the country. Others say his fear of the fundamentalist, religious revolution spreading to Iraq made him attack Iran. But in 1980, Saddam invaded his neighboring country in the hopes of a swift victory. However, he did not act quickly and the movement got slowed down. The war dragged on for 8 years (there was a short hiatus in 1982 <-- check date).
Us-Iran arms deal
United States officially remained neutral in the Iran-Iraq War. However, they led an arms embargo against Iran. BUT they contradicted this agreement by secretly selling missiles and tank parts and other arms to Iran. Their aim was to improve relations with the rogue country so that it would free the American hostages held in Lebanon.
Gassing of Kurds
Just days after a cease-fire was issued between Iraq and Iran, Saddam targeted his military brutality upon the -----. This group was sympathetic to Iran during the war because they thought their neighbor would offer then autonomy. Saddam flew chemical weapons over the entire Kurdish part of Iraq, killing 50,000 to 100,000 Kurds. 90% of all Kurdish villages were destroyed. Refugees were caught and the men killed, women put in concentration camps.
