Tough new fugitive slave act:anybody accused of being a runaway slave could be arrested and put back into slavery without a trial, also the act required the northerners to help search for runaway slaves and return them to the south. |

Sanford | dred scott sued for his freedom, scott said since he was living as a slave in a non slave state he should be free. scott was ruled not a free man for 2 reasons. 1.scott had no right to sue in federal court cause scott was not a us citzen, and 2.just by living in free territory doesn't make you free, slaves are property and property rights are protected in the constitution. |
