Mexican American WarPolk offered money to settle the claim for the rio grande border and offered to purchase california. mexico outraged refused the offer. polk sent men near the border to try and provoke the mexicans to attack polk's men. mexicans did and polk went to congress demanding a declaration of war saying mexico has shed american blood on american soil
The Compromise of 1850To please the north: 1. california admitted to union as free state 2. banned slave trade in nation's capital
To please the south: 1. popular sovereighnty in the rest of the mexican cession states: people that live in these lands would vote if they wanted to be free or slave staes 2. Tough new fugitive slave act:anybody accused of being a runaway slave could be arrested and put back into slavery without a trial, also the act required the northerners to help search for runaway slaves and return them to the south.
The Kansas Nebraska Act undid missouri compromise. kansas and nebraska territory would be decided free or slave by popular sovereighnty, this pleased southerners becuse they were sure they would vote slave state. this outraged the north.
Brooks-Sumner Incident sumner makes insult about how brook's uncle supports slavery and brooks gets angry and beats sumner with a cane. southerners send canes to brooks to show support
Dred Scott v. Sanforddred scott sued for his freedom, scott said since he was living as a slave in a non slave state he should be free. scott was ruled not a free man for 2 reasons. 1.scott had no right to sue in federal court cause scott was not a us citzen, and 2.just by living in free territory doesn't make you free, slaves are property and property rights are protected in the constitution.
Harper's Ferry John Brown attacked the town of Harper Ferry, his goal to take weapons and give them to slaves and lead a giant slave revolt. Before he could leave with weapons he was surrounded and brown was wounded and captured.
