This is the first list of foreign words and expressions for the semester. These are words and expressions that are used often in English.

ad infinitum

from Latin--endless; forever; without limit

tête à tête

from French--a private or intimate conversation between two people

fait accompli

from French--a thing already done

nolo contendere

from Latin--a plea by a defendant in a criminal case declaring that he will not make a defense but not admitting guilt

double entendre

from French--a term with two meanings; one of the meanings usually has a risqué or indecorous (improper) connotation
