The Role of the Family in Arabic culture is vital. The family is the "building block of the society". The Arabic family is Patriarchal and very tightly knit. It is the only thing you have to worry about disgracing. -Very Hospitibale-nepotism (nephews)
Partition Of Persia
Russia took over the Northern part of Persia as to obtain another warm water port and Britain took over the Southern part of Persia so they could protect India. The middle strip remained neutral.
Mehemet Ali- Nasser- Pan Arabism
Ali was a ruler of Egypt who wanted a more european style of life. He wanted European culture and style of Govt./ Military. Nasser had opposite views and followed Pan-Arabism. Pan-Arabism calls for the unity of all muslim people around the world as one-not european reform. (went from being a Secular rule to a Theocratic and also went from being a Monarchy to a Republic)
Russo-Turkish War- Congress of Berlin
Russia wanted to recover territories lost in the Crimean wars and reestablish itself in the Black Sea. Russia and its Christian Orthodox ally Serbia came to the aid of Christian Slavs in Bosnia, Herzegovina, and Bulgaria, who in 1875 had rebelled against the Muslim Ottoman rule. The purpose of the Congress of Berlin was to reorganize the countries of the balkans. Also they wanted to see Constantinople stay with the ottomans and they wanted to revise the treaty of San Stefano.
Two Balkan Wars
The First Balkan War broke out on 8 October 1912 when Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegro and Serbia (Balkan League, attacked the Ottoman Empire to get back the people under their rule, terminating its five-century rule in the Balkans (creates the Treaty of London)
The Second Balkan War broke out on 16 June 1913 when Bulgaria, attacked Serbia and Greece (former allies) because it was unhappy with it's gains. They blocked the Bulgarian troops and wend into Bulgaria. Romania and the Ottomans used that time to help against Bulgaria to win territorial gains. In the resulting Treaty of Bucharest, Bulgaria lost most of the territories gained in the First Balkan War.
Ayatollah-Islamization of Iran
There was social unrest because of the Shah's new western policies so Ayatollah took over and started Islamization. A strict form of rules and laws were established. Women had to cover faces and hair, and were not allowed to sunbathe or swim with men. Men couldn't wear shorts. Alcohol and western movies were banned along with all broadcasted music that was not religious.
Nazi Persecution of the Jews (Nuremberg Laws)
The Nazi's saw themselves as genetic superiors to the Jews and so they took it upon themselves to persecute over 6 million Jews in germany. In 1917 the Jewish population in Palestine was 10%, but by 1935 it had risen to 33% because so many Jews were fleeing. The Nuremberg laws of 1935 A)Forced Jews to wear yellow stars, B) Jewish people could hold no position in public office or Govt. C) Jewish people were forbidden to marry non-Jews D) Children were barred from schools and E)Many local businesses were destroyed
Eichmann Trial (Hannah Arendt)
Adolf Eichmann was found responsible for routing the trains carrying the Jewish citizens to the concentration camps. The controversies raised by Hannah Arendt were as follows: 1) Jewish authorities helped transfer Jews and made it easier for Nazi's to do these things (wanting to save their own families) 2)"Banality of Evil"- Evil things were done thoughtlessly without considering the consequences
The Shah's rule was compromised by Mossadegh (A very prominent Anti-Western leader/Prime Minister-angry at the Shah's Westernization of the middle east) and at one point was ended after Mossadegh took over the throne. That only lasted for so long because Mossadegh was taken down by "U.S. backed troops" and the Shah took back the throne.
British Takeover of Egypt (19'th century)
Brittain wanted to take over Egypt to secure their spot along the Suez canal (a manmade canal connecting the Red Sea and the Mediterranean) and also wanted their abundance in their chief export-cotton.
European takeover of North Africa (19 century)
Wanted raw materials after the economic downfall of the 1800's and thought to expand into Africa to meet these needs.
