Confederacy group of southern states that seceded from the United States.
Compromise of 1850 A law that settled the slavery question in California, New Mexico, and Utah.
Fugitive Slave Law A law that required police in free states to help capture escaping African Americans.
"Uncle Tom's Cabin" A book about a slave who was beaten to death. Harriet Beecher, the author who had written this book to show how awful slavery was in the south. To open peoples eyes.
Dred Scott Decision An 1857 Supreme Court decision that said slaves were private property.
"Bleeding Kansas" Brutal deaths related to antislavery issues touched off a war in Kansas for 1 year.
Secede When a state would leave the union.
Abolistionist A person who wanted to end slavery in the United States.
Prejudice A negative opinion formed without proof.
Popular Sovereignty Each state can make its own decisions about slavery.
States' Rights Each state should be allowed to make its own decisions about most issues.
Fort Sumter Marked the beginning of the Civil War when it was taken over by the Confederate soldiers in 1861.
Republican Party Party formed in 1854 that was committed to antislavery issues.
