Reconstruction rebuilding the south
Andrew Johnson the vice president who became president after Lincoln's death.
black codes described the rights and duties of the freed Africans. It was unlawful for former slaves to live in certain areas and to hold certain jobs. They also said that former slaves without jobs could be arrested and forced to work to pay their fines.
Fourteenth Amendment Made blacks citizens of the United States and guaranteed them the same legal rights as whites. It became part of the Constitution in 1868.
Freedman's Bureau Created by Congress in 1865 to provide food, clothing, shelter, medical care, jobs and legal help to both blacks and whites. Also set up schools for newly freed people.
sharecropping Renting land and promising to pay with a share of the crop raised on it. The people who rent the land are called sharecroppers.
impeach to charge a government official with wrongdoing.
Hiram R. Revels the first African American elected to the Senate.
Fifteenth Amendment passed in 1870. It says states couldn't deny male citizens the right to vote on account of race or color.
Jim Crow laws passed in the Southern states making the separation of white and black people legal.
segregation separation of people by race.
