| black codes | described the rights and duties of the freed Africans. It was unlawful for former slaves to live in certain areas and to hold certain jobs. They also said that former slaves without jobs could be arrested and forced to work to pay their fines. |
| Fourteenth Amendment | Made blacks citizens of the United States and guaranteed them the same legal rights as whites. It became part of the Constitution in 1868. |
| Freedman's Bureau | Created by Congress in 1865 to provide food, clothing, shelter, medical care, jobs and legal help to both blacks and whites. Also set up schools for newly freed people. |
| sharecropping | Renting land and promising to pay with a share of the crop raised on it. The people who rent the land are called sharecroppers. |
