Emancipation Proclomation Lincoln's order that slaves in confederate states will be forever free. *Changes foucus of the war from being about just preserving the Union to ENDING SLAVERY.

Sectionalism Loyalty to a section or region rather than to the whole country.
Battle of Gettysburg The turning point in the Civil War. Lee was badly defeated & gave up plans to invade the Union. The war would drag on for 2 more years.
Andersonville Prison Located in Georgia; one out of every 3 union prisoners died of starvation or disease.
Conscription Act Required all able bodied males between 20 & 45 to serve in the military. For a fee of $300, you could buy your way out of military service.
NYC Draft Riots The worst riot in American history. Poor whites targeted the wealthy, Republicans, & African-Americans.
Battle of Bull Run July 21, 1891: Richmond, VA.
Reason: To capture Richmond.
Outcome: The major Union troops retreated; taught both sides that they needed more training & that this would be a long war.
Battle of Merrimack Vs. Monitor March, 1862: Off the coast of VA
Reason: Confederates were trying to stop the Union's Blockade.
Outcome: Both surrendered, but the Union held their Blockade.
Battle of Shiloh April 6, 1862: TN
Reason: To capture the Mississippi River
Outcome: Grant & Sherman became famous; the Union gained control of the Mississippi River, but with heavy losses.
Battle of Antietam September, 1862: MD
Reason: Confederates wanted to win a battle on Union soil.
Outcome: The Union claimed victory & Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclomation shortly after.
54th Regiment- Massachusetts The 1st regiment of the Civil War that was completely constructed of African-American soldiers.
Effects of New Technology Because of old-fashioned fighting techniques combined with new technology from the Industrial Revolution, the Civil War lost more soldiers than any other war in American history.
