NO work/ labor but they are not as free as a white man. Slave Codes kept slaves from running away or rebelling. The slaves were mistreated. Were not educated so they couldn't really escape slavery. Extended family Grandparents, parents, children, aunts, uncles, and cousins formed a close-knit group.
