Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress passed on August 7, 1964 in direct response to a minor naval engagement known as the Gulf of Tonkin Incident. It is of historical significance because it gave U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson authorization, without a formal declaration of war by Congress, for the use of military force in Southeast Asia.

Freedom Summer

A campaign of whites and blacks in the United States launched in June 1964 to attempt to register as many African American voters as possible in Mississippi. Some were violently beaten and one man was killed.

Kent State

An Ohio University where National Guardsmen opened fire on students protesting the Vietnam War on May 4,1970, wounding nine and killing four.

Nixon in China

February 21, 1972- Nixon visited for a week to meet with Chairman Mao Tse-Tung for improved relations with China, Called "ping-pong diplomacy" because Nixon played ping pong with Mao during his visit. Nixon agreed to support China's admission to the United Nations.

Nixon in the Soviet Union

1972- initiated détente and the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with the Soviet Union. SALT 1.

Watergate

1972; Nixon feared losing the election so he approved the Commission to Re-Elect the President to spy on and espionage the Democrats. A security gaurd foiled an attempt to bug the Democratic National Committe Headquarters, exposing the scandal. Lead to Nixon's resignation.

Neil Armstrong

1st person to walk on the moon; U.S. Apollo 11; July, 1969; his famous words - "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

Carter Presidency

Many Middle East skirmishes including the beginins of the first Iraq war and the Iran Hostage Situation; OPEC oil issue; push for conservation

Iran Hostage

1978 - a popular uprising forced the Shah to flee Iran and a Muslim and national leader, the Ayatollah Khomeini, established an Islamic Republic based on the Koran. President Carter allowed the Shah to come to the U.S. for medical reasons. Young Iranian militants broke into the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and kept the staff hostage for 444 days, releasing them January, 1981.

Ronald Reagan and the "evil empire"

Ronald Reagan's description of Soviet Union because of his fierce anti-communist views and the USSR's history of violation of human rights and aggression. In Reagan's mind, communism was public enemy number one and the USSR was the HQ of communism; led to Reagan's massive arms build up and much speculation over whether he'd be the one to "push the button" (fire a nuke at the USSR).

Iran Contra

A political scandal in the United States which came to light in November 1986, during the Reagan administration, in which senior US figures agreed to facilitate the sale of arms to Iran, the subject of an arms embargo, to secure the release of hostages and to fund Nicaraguan contras.

Strategic Defense Initiative

Popularly known as "Star Wars," President Reagan's SDI proposed the construction of an elaborate computer-controlled, anti-missile defense system capable of destroying enemy missiles in outer spaced. Critics claimed that SDI could never be perfected.

Three Mile Island

1979 - A Nuclear Power Plant in Harrisburg, Penn. which failed, causing radiation to be admitted in the aircombined to permit an escape of radiation over a 16 mile radius.
