Definitions

central nervous system(CNS: that part of the nervous system made up of the brain and spinal cord)
peripheral nervous system PNS: that part of the nervous system lying outside of the brain and spinal cord, the nerves of the body)
neuron nerve cells made up of a cell body, dendrites and an axon
glial cell also called neuroglia; "glia" means "glue", they are the supporting cells of the nervous system
sensory neurons transmit sensory impulses from all parts of the body to the spinal cord and brain
motor neurons transmit impulses from the brain and spinal cord to muscles and glandular tissue
interneurons connect sensory and motor neurons
afferent neuron another name for a sensory neuron
efferent neuron(another name for a motor neuron)
myelin a white, fatty substance that wraps around the axons of some nerves to increase the speed of conduction of the impulse
nodes of Ranvier bare spots on and axon where there is no myelin
Schwann cell a cell in the peripheral nervous system responsible for producing myelin
nerve a group of peripheral nerve cell fibers bundled together
tract group of nerve cell bodies in the peripheral nervous system
saltatory conduction conduction (the method by which an electrical impulse "jumps" from node to node
synapse the area where electrical impulses are transmitted from one neuron to another
medulla oblongata enlarges upward extension of the spinal cord
CVA a cerebrovascular accident or stroke, the third most common cause of death in the USA
dura mater the outermost layer or covering of the brain and spinal cord, literally means "tough mother")
arachnoid mater the middle meninge or covering of the brain and spinal cord, means "spider like"
pia mater innermost membrane or meninge covering the brain and spinal cord, means 'tender mother")
sympathetic nervous system one of the divisions of the autonomic nervous system, often referred to as "fight or flight"
parasympathetic nervous system one of the divisions of the autonomic nervous system, often referred to as "rest and digest")
neurotransmitter chemicals used for communication between neurons; examples include dopamine, epinephrine and acetylcholine
