Definitions

Anatomy The study of the body's structure and organization.
Physiology The study of how the body functions,
Pathophysiology the study of functional changes with a particular syndrome or disease.
Homeostasis General stability in the internal environment of the body regardless of external environment. Naturally maintained by the body's adaptive responses. Body functions controlled by homeostatic mechanisms; Heartbeat, B/P, Body Temperature, respiration, and glandular secretion.
Anatomic Planes Used to describe the relation of internal body structures to the surface of the body.
Sagittal plane Runs vertically through body, creating R and L Sections.
Transverse (Horizontal) Plane divides body into superior and inferior sections
Frontal plane Divides the body into Ventral and Dorsal sections
Body Regions Organize the anatomic structures
Axial Skeleton Composed of head, neck, thorax, and abdomen
Appendicular skeleton Composed of extremities (limbs) Arms, Pelvic bones, Legs.
Viscera the organs contained in a cavity are collectively referred to as Viscera.
Serous Membrane Line each body cavity. Membranes are composed or Parietal Membrane and Visceral Membrane.
Parietal Membrane adheres to the cavity wall
Visceral membrane Adheres to the organ.
Visceral Always used in reference to organs.
Two main body cavities Ventral and Dorsal Cavity
Ventral cavity Contains the majority of the organs and is divided into the thoracic cavity and the abdominopelvic cavity.
Thoracic Cavity Contained in the upper part of Ventral cavity. Further subdivided into the R&L Pleural Cavities which contains the R&L Pleura (lungs)
Mediastinum Separates pleural cavities, Includes the trachea, esophagus, thymus gland, Heart, and Great Vessels.
Pericardium Contains heart, 2 layers of fibrous tissue. Visceral pericardium (epicardium) & Parietal Pericardium (Pericardial Sac)
Visceral Pericardium Epicardium, Innermost layer and covers heart itself.
Parietal Pericardium Outer layer that surrounds the heart.
Pericardial Cavity Space between visceral and parietal pericardium.
Boarder of the thoracic cavity & abdominopelvic cavity The Diaphragm
