antagonist | the person or thing fighting against the main character of a story |
static character (flat) | a literary character who remains mostly unchanged throughout a story |
dynamic character (round) | a literary character who undergoes an internal change during a story |
plot | the series of related events that make up a story |
exposition | usually the beginning of the story |
rising action | part of a story where conflicts arise leading to the climax |
climax | highest point or turning point in the action of the story |
falling action | follows the climax and contains the action or dialogue that leads the story to a resolution or ending |
resolution | part of a story where problems are solved/the end |
conflict | the problem in the story that triggers the action |
character vs character | one character in the story has a problem with another character |
character vs society | a character has a problem with society defined as school, law, or tradition |
character vs him or herself | a character struggles inside and has trouble making a decision |
character vs nature | a character has a problem with an element of nature like a snowstorm, an avalanche, or the bitter cold |
foreshadowing | the writer's hints and clues about what will happen in the story |
subplot | a story that is secondary to the main story |
flashback | when an author goes back to an earlier time in a story and explains something that will help the reader understand the story better |
setting | time and place of a story |
mood | the atmosphere or emotion conveyed by the text |
