Terminology

anterior (ventral)

front, in front of

ex. the stomach is anterior to the kidney

distal

away from or farthest from the point of attachment or origin

ex. the wrist is distal to the shoulder

dorsal (posterior)

the back, behind

inferior

below or towards the feet

ex. the liver is inferior to the diaphragm

lateral

at or towards the side

ex. the lungs are lateral to the heart

medial

towards the body's midline

ex. the heart is medial to the lungs

proximal

towards or closest to the point of attachment or origin

ex. the elbow is proximal to the wrist

superior

above or towards the head

ex. the lungs are superior to the diaphragm

sagittal
(SAJ-it-ahl)

structure is dissected to divide into right and left sides

midsagittal

division is directly in the midline

frontal section

divide into front and back sections

transverse section

divide into top and bottom portions
