annotation | notes added to a work for explanation |
antithesis | presentation for 2 contrasting images in writing: "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times"; note how the 2 images are grammatically balanced |
aphorism | a witty, short saying that expresses a truth about life: e.g. "the early bird gets the worm" |
apostrophe | calling out to an imaginary or dead person/calling out to an abstraction: "Oh beauty, where have you gone?" |
argumentation | writing that attempts to prove the validity of a point; persuasion is a type |
cacophony | harsh, awkward sounds - used deliberately (or not!) |
caricature | descriptive writing that greatly emphasizes a particular aspect of a person's features or personality |
colloquialism | a word or phrase used in everyday conversation; informal, slang; often regional: e.g. "hella," "sick," "epic fail," etc. |
coherence | quality of a piece of writing that makes it unified from beginning to end (central idea, theme, or guiding principle) |
